HOW RUSSIAN CITIZENS WATCHED THE OPENING OF THE OLYMPICS IN PYEONGCHANG

Opening ceremony of the XXIII Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang was held last Friday. Television broadcast took place only on “Match-TV” channel, but it has become a record for the number of live broadcasts on the Internet.

This year, the only TV channel that showed the opening of the winter Olympic Games in South Korea was Match-TV (owned by Gazprom-media holding). More than 5 million people or 7% of the population of Russia (cities from 100 thousand) turned on the broadcast of the ceremony at least for a minute, reported Mediascope to AdIndex. The average broadcast audience was 1.8 million people, which is 2.6% of the population or 14% of viewers.

It was possible to watch the broadcast in Internet in real time on the website of Match-TV, Odnoklassniki, Vkontakte, on the main page of Yandex, on sportbox.ru portal and website of “Perviy Kanal” (Channel One). On Odnoklassniki it had been viewed by more than 3.5 million unique users, told in the press service of the social network to AdIndex. Live broadcast of the opening of the Olympics never took place in “Vkontakte”, wrote in RBC. “Yandex” have not yet reported on the date about the views. Sites of “Match TV” channel and spotrbox.ru together have collected 150 thousand views, reported RBC by with reference to a source in “Gazprom-Media”.

Mediascope also assessed out-of-home audience of broadcast (Day-after-recall, Russia, cities with population from 100 thousand, 1,000 respondents aged 12 to 64 years). According to the results of this survey, 84% of viewers watched the ceremony at home, 8.3% – at work, and a little more than 7% were in other places in the time of viewing – transport, cafes, restaurants, etc.

44% of Russians are planning to follow the Olympic Games, 29% found it difficult to answer, and 27% are not going to follow the course of the Games at all. Biathlon, figure skating, hockey and ski race were among the most interesting subjects for the population – from 20 to 34% of respondents said they would follow these competitions. According to TV Index project, broadcast of these sports were the most popular during the Olympics in Sochi — then they totaled about 65% view of all Sochi competitions.

“2018 is full of sport events, in which Mediascope Company plans to conduct large-scale research, including those of the FIFA world Cup 2018 in Russia. In the project the cumulative audience of the broadcast in all media will be estimated, including out-of-home viewing, also a full monitoring of advertising and sponsorship integration will be done. In addition, Mediascope plans to additionally conduct a specialized study of fans and the attitude of the population to sports”, — says Ruslan Tagiyev, CEO of Mediascope.

ЦThe opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Sochi was the record for the number of views. Live broadcast of the main sporting event in Russia in 2014 was showed at the same time by “Perviy Kanal” (Channel One) and “Russia 1”; on the home screen it was watched by about 33% of the population in the middle moment (22.4 million people). The share of the audience was about 70% of viewers.
