OKKO WILL BE THE FIRST IN RUSSIA TO SHOW MOVIES WITH DOLBY ATMOS SOUND

Online cinema Okko will be the first among Russian market players of legal online rental to show movies with Dolby Atmos sound. Currently in the collection of Okko there are movies from leading Hollywood and Russian studios that support this audio format, their number will be constantly increased. Earlier Okko became the first online cinema in Russia, which had content with Dolby Digital sound.

Dolby Atmos — cinema technology of surround sounds. Instead of audio channels, that all the popular formats are based on (mono, stereo, 5.1), Dolby Atmos works with sound objects — any sound information, followed by metadata about its position in three-dimensional space. This allows to play sounds with pinpoint precision, providing remarkably clean, crisp and versatile sound that fills the whole room.

“If you close your eyes and just listen to the sounds, you will think that you are not watching the events on the screen, but are in the middle of it. So vividly and clearly you’ll hear everything,” says Igor Sokolov, technical Director of Okko

Technology appeared in 2012, is used by all major Hollywood studios at the moment: more than 700 films have been made using Dolby Atmos. Dolby Atmos gives the audience an unforgettable viewing experience: it enlivens the action on screen with unmatched accuracy and realism, providing the effect of full immersion. Technology provides new possibilities for the realization of ideas and provides a full transmission design, guarantees the exact reproduction of sounds in the film exactly as the Director intended.

“Dolby Atmos is the most significant development in the field of sound in cinema since the invention of surrounded sound. We are pleased that through our collaboration with Okko people will be able to enjoy watching a favorite movie at home as if they were in the cinema. We are grateful to Okko for the trust and hope that our cooperation will be productive”, – said Alexey Ugrinovich, General Director of Dolby in Russia and the CIS

In contrast to the latest standard, Ultra HD, which can be realized through upscale (rework of Full HD format) it is impossible to re-code the movies with mono, stereo or sound 5:1 into Dolby Atmos because the technology is not based on sound channels, but on sound objects, which is a fundamental difference in the production of sound. Because of this, Dolby Atmos is rather difficult to perform in VOD: only a few streaming services, including Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, Hulu Plus and the German Maxdome have the ability to stream movies in VOD with a sound.

Until now in Russia Dolby Atmos was only available in cinemas. Okko has become the first Russian VOD service, which makes it possible to view movies in Dolby Atmos at home.

To make Dolby Atmos at home possible, we have done a lot of work with the studios for searching and selection of materials and their adaptation. We have found a partner who helped us to convert movies with the cinema Dolby Atmos format into format, suitable for home, re-coded the content, and tested how it can be played on various home devices with support of Dolby Atmos. Also an engineering work the integration of technology into the streaming was made with all the requirements of Hollywood content protection on the entire line of devices,” says Igor Sokolov, technical Director of Okko.

Now Dolby Atmos technology is supported by Okko on the entire line of LG TV OLED TV in 2017. In order to hear the sound in all its clarity, it is recommended also to use a Sound-bar or home theater system with Dolby Atmos.

“The lineup of 2017 was developed in accordance with modern trends in the world of electronics. New premium OLED TVs support the Dolby Atmos™, so you can enjoy movies in the format in which they were originally created. The LG TVs meet the high demands of the buyers: perfect color and contrast, deep black color, support of HDR format, high quality display with wide viewing angles, crystal-clear sound and elegant unique design.”, – says Kevin Park, the Director of Smart TV in Russia and CIS countries of LG Electronics.

“Sounds is important and maybe even more important that picture, to create an atmosphere of immersion in the film. It allows you to expand the boundaries of the screen and helps to truly immerse yourself in what is happening. With the advanced Dolby Atmos technology, you do not even need to leave the house,” says Alexei Ugrinovich, General Director of Dolby in Russia and the CIS.

“Dolby Atmos is the future of sound. Film industry, computer games, television are changing to Atmos all over the world. Okko has always tried to make a home viewing more close to cinema viewing. We showed out interest in Atmos technology even in 2015, when Dolby Atmos for home appeared in Russia. However, there were no devices capable of reproducing surrounded sound in the house. Today, things have changed: devices that support Dolby Atmos have become available, and therefore Okko should be the first on the market to offer the technology to the audience”, – says Igor Sokolov.

At the moment in the library of Okko on LG the following movies are available movies with Dolby Atmos sound:

• La-La Land
• Deepwater horizon
• Attraction
• Viking
• The illusion of deception 2
• Anna Karenina. The Story of Vronsky

Okko plans to expand the collection in the near future.
