Online cinema Okko analyzed what Russian watched during New Year’s holidays from 30 December 2017 till 8 January 2018. “Atomic blonde” became the most popular, beating “Blade Runner 2049”, top most popular films also included “Yolki 5”. A third of all views came in the films of Russian producers.
The number of film views in the cinema online Okko in New Year’s holidays has increased more than 2 times in comparison with the same period in 2017, while the share of views of Russian films (compared to the previous year) has changed in favor of local content: 32.6% versus 26.2%.
The Christmas movies were popular on December 30-31 and January 1; on 31 of December, 8 of the top 20 movies watched by the Russians, were traditional holiday films: “ Yolki 5”, “Ironia Sudbi”, “A Christmas story”, “Ivan Vasilyevich meniaet professiyu”, “Home Alone”, “Operation “y”, “Yolki”, “Cold heart”.
December 31 and January 1 family and children’s content was the leader of the views, in particular, such films as “Fiksiki: Big secret” and “Posledniy Bogatyr”, and from January 2 adults took the remote: on first positions were “Blade Runner 2049”and “Atomic Blonde”.

According to the research, users mostly watched drama (17%) and cartoons (16.3%). The two leaders in style were the same; at the same time third place in the top of the most popular styles were comedy (11% versus 8.7% in the New Year’s celebrations in 2017).

Interesting statistics of films watching was observed in different cities of Russia. If December 30, 2017 and from 1 to 8 January 2018 an absolute hit of watching from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok was “Atomic Blonde”, December 31 tastes of residents of the Russian Federation were noticeably different.

“New Year’s holidays — is traditionally a hot season for online cinemas. During the holiday’s period, we recorded the trend of all 2017 — growing popularity of the Russian content in VOD. The audience watched not only Christmas classics but also new releases of local film companies.
