MAJOR TRENDS OF MEDIA CONSUMPTION FROM MGTS

MGTS, the leader of the Moscow broadband Internet access market, recorded traffic growt h of 40% in 2017. Based on the analysis of data traffic MGTS identified the main trends of media consumption and the most popular Internet resources in 2017.

Trends of media consumption:

  • “Heavier” content due to the growing popularity of streaming services, online games and high-resolution online video, including through viewing and sharing video and audio content in social networks and messengers.
  • An increase in the number of Internet devices – smartphones, tablets, laptops — and the consequent increase in data consumption per household. In 2017, the family had an average of 5.5 gadgets, in 2013 — 2.5. This trend has a direct impact on the growth of Internet speed within a single household. If on one end user device (PC, tablet or Smart TV) in the MGTS network in January 2018, the speed of the wired Internet was 21.4 Mbit/s according to Vigo Company, then the real Internet speed consumed by Moscow family, based on the average number of gadgets, is at 100 Mbit/s and above.

The most visited Internet resources in 2017:

  • The largest increase in traffic (five times) was on social networks and messengers, its share increased by 3 percentage points per year and amounted to 7%. Instagram for the first time became the most visited social network among MGTS subscribers and by the volume of traffic overtook “Vkontakte”, which held a leading position in 2016. Odnoklassniki was on the third place by the volume of traffic. Skype-for making video and audio calls, WhatsApp and Viber — for exchanging video and text messages and photos remained the most popular resources providing Internet telephony and messenger services, as well as in 2016.
  • The largest share of subscriber traffic — 32%, as a year earlier, was in on streaming video services. The leaders of this category remained the same —YouTube and Rutube.
  • The share of traffic from game resources increased by 2 percentage points during the year and amounted to 3%. The first and second place among the multiplayer online games took the leaders of 2016: Dota 2 and Counter Strike. League of the Legends moved The Minecraft game from the third place.

Changes in media consumption were the main reason for the demand for high-speed Internet, which in 2017 was chosen by 80% of MGTS subscribers. Half of all new connections during this period came at the tariff of 200 Mbit/s. At the beginning of 2018, over 65% of broadband customers of MGTS used Internet at speeds of 100 Mbps and above, which is four times more than a year ago.
